Ossining Rotary beautifies Reservoir Park

The Rotary combined community service with a friendly barbeque, beautifying the new park.


Rotary Helped build a new Playground

Rotarians building playground Several Rotarians and their families participated in the building of the Arthur J. Jones Memorial Playground at the intersection of Sherman Place and Park Avenue.

The Arthur J. Jones Memorial Park was created in tribute to Arthur Jones, who died on September 11, 2001, and whose wife, Carol, still lives in Ossining with their four children. The entire project is being financed through private and corporate donations.

Rotarian Ed Falcone judges Science Fair at St. Ann's

Rotarian Ed Falcone served as Science Fair judgeMarch 16th., 2005 The Ossining Rotary Club contributed not only cash to the Science Fair, we also provided an official Judge, who reported that he liked the first graders' projects the best.

Atkinson describes Drama Program at Sing Sing

Rehabilitation Through the Arts at Sing Sing Prison March 9th, 2005 Linda Atkinson, actor, director and screenwriter, described the privately funded Rehabilitation Throught the Arts program at Sing Sing Prison. The prisoners put on two plays a year and attend acting and playwriting classes. Ms. Atkinson explained that the program results in a recidivism rate for the graduates of 2%, compared to a 60% rate for non-attendees. Dino, one of the graduates of the program, will be seen in the new movie, The Producers as one of the dancers.
Anyone wishing to attend a performance at the prison can call John Gallagher at 941-4686 to arrange entrance. The next performance is in May.

Interact Club raises $5,000 for Tsunami Relief

January 26th, 2005Interact Club co-presidents present check to Habitat    The young men and women of the OHS Interact Club dedicated last Sunday to staffing tables set up in front of CTown, Mrs. Green's and the Ossining Public Library. Together they sold greeting cards (see below), blue ribbons and donated baked goods. In total, they took in $2000 in sales and donations from the supermarket and library patrons. With a $500 contribution from the Rotary Club and a matching grant of $2500 from Habitat for Humanity, the total raised by Interact was $5000, which will be used by the local Habitat for Humanity group in Asia to build 100 houses.

Ossining Rotary Club Receives Centennial Bell

Rotary officers and distinguished visitors with Rotary Bell January 26th, 2005 The Ossining Rotary Club was one of one hundred in the nation singled out for the honor of a visit from the U.S. bell as it makes its way toward the Centennial Rotary International Convention Convention in Chicago.

Ossining Rotary Contributes to St. Matthew's

Ossining Rotary Contributes to St. Matthew's December 15th, 2004.   The Rotary Club made its annual contribution of toys and gifts to St. Matthew's Head Start Program and Day Care Center.

After the presentation, the group posed for our annual picture.

Rotary Awards Grant to Ossining Food Pantry

November 24th, 2004.   The Ossining Rotary Club awarded a grant of $500 to the Ossining Food Pantry. Tom McCardle, Pantry Board member, told the club that the Pantry's 75 volunteers feed over 130 families a week, including people who are homebound.

Rotary Awards $400 Grant to OHS's Interact.

Eric Shahinian, head of Interact, receives check from Ossining Rotary President Elect, Henry Atterbury November 3rd, 2004.   The Ossining Rotary Club awarded Interact $400 to be used to buy breast cancer awareness bands from The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The bands will be resold to OHS students and the proceeds used by Interact to fund other projects.

Said Eric Shahinian, head of Interact, "We are grateful for this contribution and we look forward to working together with the Ossining Rotary Club on the April Walkathon for Gift of Life."

Rotary Awards $1,000 Grant to Launch 5 Foundation

October 27th, 2004.The Ossining based Launch 5 Foundation, founded by Greg Porteous and his wife (seated to his right in the photo), is dedicated to performing search and rescue missions, safety patrols and training on a restored 1964 fireboat named the Henry Walburger, after a police officer who died in the line of duty.

The Board of Directors of the Ossining Rotary Club were so impresssed with Greg's tales of rescuing families and recovering lost bodies that they awarded the Foundation a $1,000 grant which will be used to purchase firefighting and medical equipment for the boat.

Mary Beth Gallagher, Lay Missionary for Maryknoll is Oct. 13th Speaker

hand crafted card made by Bengladeshi womenMary Beth told us of her year in Namibia and Bangladesh. In Namibia, the Catholic Action Center registered over 17,000 orphans living on the streets, and Mary Beth worked with 135 of them, organizing games, crafts, singing -- even a scavenger hunt.
