For the past two years, Ivanka Choumanova has been making regular visits to Hospital Barros Luco Trudeau in Santiago, Chile.
At first, Ivanka conducted a research study about the way Chilean breast cancer patients cope with their illness. Afterwards, she returned to Santiago and implemented a health education program for the patients who had mentioned to her their dreams of having more information about cancer. This 2001 Valedictorian of Ossining High School and recent graduate of Stanford University created a library, designed pamphlets and taught classes at the clinic. She is now preparing for her next trip to Santiago, this time to expand the health education program and organize a literacy program for the patients unable to read.
After hearing Ivanka speak at a May meeting, the Rotary Board voted on the spot to donate $1000 to help Ivana's project. If you would like to support the patients at Hospital Barros Luco Trudeau, please send your donations to the following address:
